1] Scope – Seamless, straight-seam welded, and severely cold worked Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe suitable for high-temperature and general corrosive service are covered by this specification.
Some of the austenitic Stainless Steel grades covered by this specification are accepted by certain pressure vessel or piping codes without the need to perform an impact test when the impact test criterion for a low-temperature service is 15 ftlbf [20 j] energy absorption or 15 mils [0.38 mm] lateral expansion. The ASME pressure vessel code, section viii division 1, and the chemical plant and refinery pipe code, ANSI b31.3, for example, accept grades TP 904l for service at temperatures as low as -425°F [250°C] without qualifying by impact testing. Other AISI stainless steel grades are commonly accepted without impact testing at service temperatures as low as 325 °f [200 °c]. Under certain conditions, impact testing may be required. When service temperatures are below – 50 °f [45 °c], materials having chromium or nickel content outside the AISI standards, as well as materials with carbon content over 0.10 percent, are needed to be impact tested under the rules of ASME section viii division 1.
A312 TP Stainless Steel 904l – are designed to withstand high temperatures while maintaining creep and stress rupture qualities. For pipe that requires a higher level of testing, there are optional extra requirements. These supplemental needs necessitate additional testing, and it is permissible to indicate one or more of these supplementary requirements in the order if desired.
These specifications apply to heavily cold worked pipe as well. SS Pipe with different dimensions may be ordered and delivered as long as it meets all other requirements of this specification.
The values indicated in either SI or inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard in their own right. The SI units are indicated in brackets throughout the text. Because the values presented in each system may not be exact equivalents, each system should be used separately. Combining values from the two systems could lead to non-compliance with the standard. Unless the “m” designation of this specification is provided in the order, the inch-pound units will apply.
Note 2 — the dimensionless designator nps (nominal pipe size) has been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size”
2] Terminology – The definitions in specification A999/A999m and terminology A941 are applicable to this specification.
3] Ordering Information – Orders for material to this specification shall conform to the requirements of the current edition of specification a999/ a999m.
4] General Requirements – Material furnished under this specification shall conform to the applicable requirements of the current edition of specification a999/a999m unless otherwise provided herein.
5] Materials and Manufacture – The stainless steel pipe shall be manufactured by one of the following processes: Seamless (sml) pipe shall be made by a process that does not involve welding at any stage of production.
6] Heat Treatment – All stainless steel pipe must be heat-treated in line with table 2 criteria. Alternatively, for seamless pipe, pipes must be individually quenched in water or rapidly chilled by other methods immediately following hot forming when the temperature of the pipes is not less than the minimum solution treatment temperature stated in table 2. (direct quenched).
7] Product Analysis – The manufacturer shall analyse one billet or one length of flat-rolled stock from each heat, or two pipes from each lot, at the request of the purchaser. A lot of pipe is defined as the number of lengths of the same size and wall thickness from any one heat of steel.
What is Stainless Steel 904L Grade – Type 904l stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel from the 300 series. It contains a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, as well as a maximum of 0.08 percent carbon. A chromium-nickel austenitic alloy is what it’s called. Grade 904L stainless steel is the common “18/8” stainless that you’ll find in most pans and cooking equipment.
What is Stainless Steel 904L used for – 904L stainless steel is used for a variety of household and industrial applications such as utensils, and car headers, food handling and processing equipment, screws, machinery parts. 904L stainless steel is also used in the architectural field for exterior accents such as water and fire features.
Which is better Stainless Steel 904L or Stainless Steel 316 – since type 316 stainless steel alloy contains molybdenum bearing it has a greater resistance to chemical attack than 904L. Type 316 is a strong, easy-to-fabricate metal that’s also easy to clean, weld, and finish. At high temperatures, it is much more resistant to sulfuric acid, chlorides, bromides, iodides, and fatty acids solutions.
Which is cheaper SS 904L or SS 316 – Another reason for its popularity and broad use is that 904L stainless steel is less expensive than SS 316. Because it has a stronger corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides and chlorinated solutions, Stainless Steel 316 is more expensive.
How is Stainless Steel 904L pipe weight calculated – thick (mm) x w. Thick (mm) x 0.0248 = wt. What is the entire form of erw pipe? Electric Resistance Welded (erw) pipe is made by cold forming a flat steel strip into a rounded tube and then running it through a succession of forming rollers to achieve a longitudinal seam. The two edges are then heated and pressed together to establish a bond using a high frequency current.
Why does Stainless Steel not rust – A steel alloy with a minimum chromium content of 10.5 percent is known as stainless steel. The chromium combines with oxygen in the air to generate a protective coating, making stainless steel extremely corrosion and rust resistant.
Can Stainless Steel rust in salt water – If exposed to seawater or other corrosive environments over an extended period of time, stainless steel can rust and corrode. Grade 904L, often known as UNS N08904, is the most widely used austenitic or 300 series steel. As a result, this metal is more resistant to corrosion caused by salty water.

8] permitted variations in wall thickness – In addition to the implicit wall thickness limitation imposed by the weight limitation in specification a999/a999m, the wall thickness of seamless and welded pipe at any point shall be within the tolerances specified in table 3, with the exception that the weld area for welded pipe shall not be limited by the “over” tolerance.

The stainless steel pipe data chart below can be used to determine pipe sizes, diameters, wall thickness, operating pressures, and other information. The chart is based on ASME/ANSI b36.10 welded and seamless wrought steel pipe, as well as ASME/ANSI b36.19 stainless steel pipe.
Pipes of a given size have the same outer diameter regardless of schedule number (not withstanding manufacturing tolerances). The wall thickness increases as the schedule number increases, and the actual bore decreases.
For example:A 4 inches (100 mm) schedule 40 pipe has an outside diameter of 4.500 inches (114.30 mm), a wall thickness of 0.237 inches (6.02 mm), giving a bore of 4.026 inches (102.26 mm) a 4 inches (100 mm) schedule 80 pipe has an outside diameter of 4.500 inches ( 114.30 mm), a wall thickness of 0.337 inches (8.56 mm), giving a bore of 3.826 inches (97.18 mm)
