1] Scope – This specification covers seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold worked Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Tube intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service.
When the impact test criterion for a low-temperature service would be 15 ft·lbf [20 j] energy absorption or 15 mils [0.38 mm] lateral expansion, some of the austenitic stainless steel grades covered by this specification are accepted by certain pressure vessel or piping codes without the necessity of making the actual test. For example, grades tp304, tp304l, are accepted by the ASME pressure vessel code, section viii division 1, and by the chemical plant and refinery piping code, ANSI b31.3, for service at temperatures as low as −425 °f [−250 °c] without qualification by impact tests. Other AISI stainless steel grades are usually accepted for service temperatures as low as −325 °f [−200 °c] without impact testing. Impact testing may, under certain circumstances, be required. For example, materials with chromium or nickel content outside the AISI ranges, and for material with carbon content exceeding 0.10 %, are required to be impact tested under the rules of ASME section viii division 1 when service temperatures are lower than −50 °f [−45 °c].
A312 TP 317L – are intended for service at temperatures where creep and stress rupture properties are important. Optional supplementary requirements are provided for Tube where a greater degree of testing is desired. These supplementary requirements call for additional tests to be made and, when desired, it is permitted to specify in the order one or more of these supplementary requirements.
These dimensions are also applicable to heavily cold worked Tube. Tube having other dimensions is permitted to be ordered and furnished provided such Tube complies with all other requirements of this specification
The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. The inch-pound units shall apply unless the “m” designation of this specification is specified in the order.
Note 2 — the dimensionless designator nps (nominal Tube size) has been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size”
2] Terminology – The definitions in specification A999/A999m and terminology A941 are applicable to this specification.
3] Ordering Information – Orders for material to this specification shall conform to the requirements of the current edition of specification a999/ a999m.
4] General Requirements – Material furnished under this specification shall conform to the applicable requirements of the current edition of specification a999/a999m unless otherwise provided herein.
5] Materials and Manufacture – The Tube shall be manufactured by one of the following processes: Seamless (sml) Tube shall be made by a process that does not involve welding at any stage of production.
6] Heat Treatment – All Tube shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition in accordance with the requirements of table 2. Alternatively, for seamless Tube, immediately following hot forming while the temperature of the Tubes is not less than the minimum solution treatment temperature specified in table 2, Tubes shall be individually quenched in water or rapidly cooled by other means (direct quenched).
7] Product Analysis – At the request of the purchaser, an analysis of one billet or one length of flat-rolled stock from each heat, or two Tubes from each lot shall be made by the manufacturer. A lot of Tube shall consist of the following number of lengths of the same size and wall thickness from any one heat of steel
What is SS 317L Grade – type 317 stainless steel is a t 300 series stainless steel austenitic. It has a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, combined with a maximum of 0.08% carbon. It is defined as a chromium-nickel austenitic alloy. Grade 317 is the standard “18/8” stainless that you will probably see in your pans and cookery tools.
What is ss 317L used for – 317 stainless steel is used for a variety of household and industrial applications such as food handling and processing equipment, screws, machinery parts, utensils, and car headers. 317 stainless steel is also used in the architectural field for exterior accents such as water and fire features.
Which is better SS 317L or SS 316 – since type 316 stainless steel alloy contains molybdenum bearing it has a greater resistance to chemical attack than 317. Type 316 is durable, easy-to-fabricate, clean, weld and finish. It is considerably more resistant to solutions of sulfuric acid, chlorides, bromides, iodides and fatty acids at high temperature.
Which is cheaper SS 317L or SS 316 – 317 stainless is also cheaper in cost compared to 316, another reason for its popularity and widespread use. Stainless 316 is more expensive because it provides a higher corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides and chlorinated solutions.
How is SS 317L Tube weight calculated – thick (mm) x w. Thick (mm) x 0.0248 = wt. What is the full form of erw Tube-electric resistance welded (erw) Tube is manufactured by cold forming a flat steel strip into a rounded tube and passing it through a series of forming rollers to obtain a longitudinal seam. The two edges are then simultaneously heated with a high frequency current and squeezed together to form a bond.
Why does stainless steel not rust – stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains a minimum chromium content of 10.5%. The chromium reacts with the oxygen in the air and forms a protective layer that makes stainless steel highly resistant to corrosion and rust.
Can stainless steel rust in salt water –stainless steel can, in fact, rust and corrode if continuously exposed to saltwater or other corrosive conditions over time. Grade 317, otherwise referred to as the uns S31703, is the most popular of austenitic or the 300 series. … That’s why this metal displays a higher resistance to corrosion by salty water.

The results of these analyses shall be reported to the purchaser or the purchaser’s representative, and shall conform to the requirements specified
If the analysis of one of the tests specified in 8.1 does not conform to the requirements specified in section 7, an analysis of each billet or Tube from the same heat or lot may be made, and all billets or Tube conforming to the requirements shall be accepted.
8] permitted variations in wall thickness – In addition to the implicit limitation of wall thickness for seamless Tube imposed by the limitation on weight in specification a999/a999m, the wall thickness for seamless and welded Tube at any point shall be within the tolerances specified in table 3, except that for welded Tube the weld area shall not be limited by the “over” tolerance.
The wall thickness and outside diameter for inspection for compliance with this requirement for Tube ordered by nps and schedule number is shown in table x1.1.
Annealing requirements | |
Heat treatment | 1900 °f [1040 °c] |
Manufacturing Process – Machining stainless steel grade 317L requires low speeds and constant feeds to reduce its tendency to work harden. This steel is tougher than grade 304 stainless steel with a long stringy chip; however, using chip breakers is recommended. Welding can be performed using most of the conventional fusion and resistance methods. Oxyacetylene welding should be avoided. AWS E/ER 317L filler metal is recommended.
Conventional hot working processes can be performed. The material should be heated to 1149-1260°C (2100-2300°F); however, it should not be heated below 927°C (1700°F). To optimize corrosion resistance, a post-work annealing is recommended. Shearing, stamping, heading and drawing are possible with grade 317L stainless steel, and post-work annealing is recommended to eliminate internal stresses. Annealing is performed at 1010-1121°C (1850-2050°F), which should be followed by rapid cooling. Grade 317L stainless steel does not respond to heat treatment.
