1] Scope – Seamless, straight-seam welded, and severely cold worked Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe suitable for high-temperature and general corrosive service are covered by this specification.
Some of the austenitic Stainless Steel grades covered by this specification are accepted by certain pressure vessel or piping codes without the need to perform an impact test when the impact test criterion for a low-temperature service is 15 ftlbf [20 j] energy absorption or 15 mils [0.38 mm] lateral expansion. The ASME pressure vessel code, section viii division 1, and the chemical plant and refinery pipe code, ANSI b31.3, for example, accept grades TP 316 and TP 316l for service at temperatures as low as -425°F [250°C] without qualifying by impact testing. Other AISI stainless steel grades are commonly accepted without impact testing at service temperatures as low as 325 °f [200 °c]. Under certain conditions, impact testing may be required. When service temperatures are below – 50 °f [45 °c], materials having chromium or nickel content outside the AISI standards, as well as materials with carbon content over 0.10 percent, are needed to be impact tested under the rules of ASME section viii division 1.
A312 TP 316/316L – are designed to withstand high temperatures while maintaining creep and stress rupture qualities. For pipe that requires a higher level of testing, there are optional extra requirements. These supplemental needs necessitate additional testing, and it is permissible to indicate one or more of these supplementary requirements in the order if desired.
These specifications apply to heavily cold worked pipe as well. SS Pipe with different dimensions may be ordered and delivered as long as it meets all other requirements of this specification.
The values indicated in either SI or inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard in their own right. The SI units are indicated in brackets throughout the text. Because the values presented in each system may not be exact equivalents, each system should be used separately. Combining values from the two systems could lead to non-compliance with the standard. Unless the “m” designation of this specification is provided in the order, the inch-pound units will apply.
Note 2 — the dimensionless designator nps (nominal pipe size) has been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size”
2] Terminology –
The definitions in specification A999/A999m and terminology A941 are applicable to this specification.
3] Ordering Information –
Orders for material to this specification shall conform to the requirements of the current edition of specification a999/ a999m.
4] General Requirements –
Material furnished under this specification shall conform to the applicable requirements of the current edition of specification a999/a999m unless otherwise provided herein.
5] Materials and Manufacture –
The pipe shall be manufactured by one of the following processes: Seamless (sml) pipe shall be made by a process that does not involve welding at any stage of production.
6] Heat Treatment – All stainless steel pipe must be heat-treated in line with table 2 criteria. Alternatively, for seamless pipe, pipes must be individually quenched in water or rapidly chilled by other methods immediately following hot forming when the temperature of the pipes is not less than the minimum solution treatment temperature stated in table 2. (direct quenched).
7] Product Analysis –
The manufacturer shall analyse one billet or one length of flat-rolled stock from each heat, or two pipes from each lot, at the request of the purchaser. A lot of pipe is defined as the number of lengths of the same size and wall thickness from any one heat of steel.
What is SS 316 Grade – Type 316 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel from the 300 series. It contains a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, as well as a maximum of 0.08 percent carbon. A chromium-nickel austenitic alloy is what it’s called. Grade 316 stainless steel is the common “18/8” stainless that you’ll find in most pans and cooking equipment.

Does 316 stainless steel rust – stainless 316 is made up of 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The two steel grades are comparable in appearance, chemical makeup and characteristics. Both steels are durable and provide excellent resistance to corrosion and rust.

8] permitted variations in wall thickness – In addition to the implicit wall thickness limitation imposed by the weight limitation in specification a999/a999m, the wall thickness of seamless and welded pipe at any point shall be within the tolerances specified in table 3, with the exception that the weld area for welded pipe shall not be limited by the “over” tolerance.

The steel pipe data chart below can be used to find pipe sizes, diameters, wall thickness, working pressures and more. The chart is based on ASME/ANSI b 36.10 welded and seamless wrought steel pipe and ASME/ANSI b36.19 stainless steel pipe.
Regardless of schedule number, pipes of a particular size all have the same outside diameter (not withstanding manufacturing tolerances). As the schedule number increases, the wall thickness increases, And the actual bore is reduced.
For example:A 4 inches (100 mm) schedule 40 pipe has an outside diameter of 4.500 inches (114.30 mm), a wall thickness of 0.237 inches (6.02 mm), giving a bore of 4.026 inches (102.26 mm) a 4 inches (100 mm) schedule 80 pipe has an outside diameter of 4.500 inches ( 114.30 mm), a wall thickness of 0.337 inches (8.56 mm), giving a bore of 3.826 inches (97.18 mm)
